Attack of the Glitches

With a title like this, it can't be good.

My challenge file is, once again, unplayable due to game glitches.  So, here is what I am going to do and what I am not going to do.

  • I am NOT going to give up on the Nightmagics.
  • I AM going to be working to resurrect the challenge file.
  • If this is impossible, I AM going to be doing a time-skip.  This will constitute a challenge restart, but there will still be Nightmagics.  Again, this will only happen if the challenge file absolutely cannot be resurrected.
  • Because of the unplayable file, I am NOT going to be making any regular chapters until the file is resurrected.  Bonus chapters, however, are still possible.
So, think of this as somewhat of a hiatus.  I will be back, whether it is with the current generation of Nightmagics or a future generation.

Name Samantha's Imaginary Friend!

In Chapter 6, Tyla's ghost gave Samantha a toy.  That toy is an Imaginary Friend from the Generations EP, and he is going to be part of the storyline.  The only problem is that I haven't thought of a name for him.  Thus, I'd like to ask you, my readers, what you think he should be named!  Put your suggestions in the comments.  Male names only, please.

Poll is closed!  The IF is going to be named Tyler!  Thank you for your input!

The Nightmagic Legacy - Chapter 6: Tragedy and a Toddler

I spent most of my weekend either with Tyla or building a new room for our incoming child.  Sunday evening, she was ready to give birth.  Apparently, vampires' young develop faster than humans'.  As I took her to the hospital, I hoped that our child would be human.

When we got to the hospital, Tyla was taken to the maternity ward, where she gave birth to a healthy - and human - baby girl.  We named her Samantha.

After Samantha, Tyla, and I all had gone to bed that night, I heard something outside.  Looking out the window, I saw some angry-looking people with torches.  I let Tyla know about it and was about to call the Order of the Bronze - Dragon Valley's police force - when Tyla said she'd handle it.  She went outside, and sure enough, the people left.  But Tyla didn't come back inside!  Thinking something was wrong, I ran outside, only to find her lifeless body on the grass, a wooden stake piercing her chest.

I immediately called the Order of the Bronze and they confirmed what I already knew - that Tyla had been murdered.  They were reluctant to even investigate Tyla's murder, as she was a vampire, but eventually I convinced them to do it.  While they worked on investigating the crime, I still had a baby to take care of - and now I had to do it alone.

My time at home was spent taking care of Samantha.  I didn't have much time to do any of the other things I liked doing, such as playing chess.  Not that chess made me feel good at the time, since it just reminded me of playing chess with Tyla.  I missed her so much.

Although I would have liked to spend all of my time with Samantha, I did still have to work.  It was hard finding someone who would watch over Samantha while I was at work, but one of the families I had helped offered to watch over her while I was working.

The next day, I actually sat down at the chess table, but I couldn't stay there for long before thoughts of Tyla filled my mind.

By the day after that, I had gotten into a routine of working and taking care of Samantha.  I opened up the mailbox that morning, expecting to find tax demands.  Instead, I found a gift from a woman named Morida.  Apparently, she had heard of Tyla's death and wanted to get together with me.  Unfortunately for her, I wasn't interested in her; I would never love another.

And the routine continued.  But when I got home from work, I was in for a surprise: Samantha had grown into a toddler!  Apparently she had some vampire blood in her after all; a pure human would not have grown this quickly.  I immediately bought a high chair and potty chair, and just in time, too!

I also started teaching Samantha to walk...

 ...and to use the toilet.

That night, I had trouble getting to sleep.  I felt like something was wrong, and so I decided to check around the house.  It was when I checked in the kitchen that I saw a ghost.  I had seen ghosts in other people's houses before - after all, part of my job was to get them out - but never in my own house.  And something about this one looked familiar.  Then I looked at the ghost's face, and everything became clear.

The ghost was Tyla!

Tyla let me know that, even though her vampire body had died, her spirit would always love me and would always be there for Samantha.  She also gave me a toy to give to Samantha.  Then she left, explaining that she couldn't stay in the mortal world for very long in her current state.  But still, I got to see her again!

After Samantha learned to walk, the next thing was teaching her to talk.

She excelled in that, just as she did in walking.  I'm more and more proud of her every day!

The Nightmagic Legacy - Bonus Chapter: How Tyla Met Duncan

Yes, I know I said I'd introduce Generation 2 in the next chapter, and I still plan on doing so in Chapter 6.  But some game glitchiness kept me from being able to take the pictures for Chapter 6 today, so here's a bonus chapter from Tyla's point of view.  It starts during the Prologue and shows how the two met, as well as some backstory.  Enjoy.  -PSDuckie

How did I, princess of the vampires, end up living in Dragon Valley with a human man?

I'm Tylarael K'ien'sha, and this is my story.

It all started when I was just a fledgling.  I was an only child, and my mother the Queen had just successfully led an invasion of the human town of Appaloosa Plains.  I had been trying to find someone to play with for a while at that point, so when she gave me a captured human boy, I was extremely happy.  His name was Duncan, and we became close friends.  That is, until mother sold him three years later.  I was upset, but I couldn't do anything about it.  After all, she was the Queen.

I grew to see what was wrong with vampire society and eventually, I heard that Duncan had escaped.  I realized that I missed him and worked to figure out where he went, so I could be with him once again...

The Nightmagic Legacy - Chapter 5 Gameplay Footage

The Nightmagic Legacy - Chapter 5: Tyla

"Duncan?"

It was her!  My one and only friend during my time with the vampires!  But what was she doing in Dragon Valley?

"What are you doing here, Tyla?  Why are you not with your family?"

"I can't take being with them anymore.  You know just as well as I do what they're like!  I want to be with you!"

"Won't your mother be looking for you?"

"I told her I was going to look for you and bring you back.  But I'm not going to do that!  I didn't realize what you mean to me until you escaped!"

Did Tyla just admit she had feelings for me?  I definitely had feelings for her.

I thought a moment.  Then I remembered something that Dampe had told me: if I took responsibility for any misdeeds Tyla committed (of which there would be none - this is Tyla we are talking about, after all), she can stay.  "You can stay at my house, Tyla."

"Thank you so much, Duncan!"

I had work soon after that, and the spirits were hiding from me this time.  It didn't work.

They were also getting stronger!

As the days went on, the spirits got harder and harder to stop.  By the time I could go home to Tyla, I was too tired to do anything except sleep!

Finally, the Love Day festival came.  No work!  I was able to spend the day with Tyla!  One thing led to another...

Two days later, Tyla told me the good news over a game of chess.

"I'm pregnant."

The question stuck in my mind: would our child be a vampire like Tyla?

The Nightmagic Legacy - Chapter 4: Warden

The next day, I put more time into making my home a little bit better.

That night at work, I put in even more effort than I had been putting in, hoping that Dampe would say that I was ready to protect the town.  My hopes were in vain that night, although he did notice the work I was doing.

"Keep it up, kid!"

When I went to get the mail the next morning, the ground was covered with snow!  School was cancelled because of the bad weather, so I spent the time working on the house.

After finishing an upgrade on the stove, I decided to have some fun and build an igloo.

It wasn't the same as back in Appaloosa Plains with my family.  To add to the homesickness, a wild horse showed up in front of my house.  There were always horses like that in Appaloosa Plains.  In all my time in Dragon Valley, I had never felt so alone as that day.

The weather had cleared up a bit by the time I had to go to work.  I was glad to get out of the house, and at work, Dampe finally said what I was hoping he'd say!

"Kid, I think you're ready.  Meet me at the Myth, Legend, Lore, and Fact Facility tomorrow."

I could not believe it.  I had a hard time finding one, but I went to a clothing store and bought some new clothes.  I wasn't going to go to the new job with the tattered clothes I had come to Dragon Valley in!

My time at the school was also at an end.  It turned out that I, out of everyone, was named valedictorian!

Before the vampire attack, I didn't have much of an appreciation for school.  But during my time with the vampires, I wasn't allowed any education.  I hadn't realized how much I liked school until it was taken from me.

After the ceremony, I went to the Myth, Legend, Lore, and Fact Facility to meet Dampe.

"You made it, kid.  I'll teach you the ropes of maintaining the ward.  First is finding and stopping the spirits that the vampires send into Dragon Valley; second is bringing them back here.  One more thing..."

Dampe walked out of the room for a bit, then came back with a sword, a weird-looking device, and a badge.

"This device safely captures the spirits.  Once you bring them back here, we can free them from the vampires' evil.  The sword, I hope you'll never need.  It's for a vampire, should one get through.  And the badge..."

Dampe touched the flat end of the sword to my shoulder.

"Duncan, I hereby name you a Warden of Dragon Valley.  Wear it proudly."

The rest of the week went by quickly.  M.L.L.F. would detect a breach and send me to the location, it would just be a group of minor spirits, I would catch them and bring them back to M.L.L.F. to be freed.

I did this two or three times a day until Saturday, when I was sent to the graveyard.  The breach there was anything but minor - it was a full-fledged vampire!  I was about to draw my sword when I recognized her face.  Could it be?

"Tyla?"

The Nightmagic Legacy - Chapter 3: Maintaining the Ward

The next day, I decided to go fishing.

After a bit of fishing, I went to the Myth, Legend, Lore, and Fact facility, where I saw a familiar face.  It was Dampe!  Although I didn't know what exactly they were talking about, I couldn't help but overhear some of his conversation with one of the MLLF staff members.

"Dampe, you're the last of the Order.  You have to find a successor!"

"I know, I know.  I'm working on it!"

What were they talking about?  When I got to work that evening, I asked Dampe. His answer surprised me.

"Kid, I told you about the ward that keeps the vampires out.  Well, someone has to maintain it, and that someone is me.  The problem is that I'm getting old and I haven't found someone to take over once I'm gone.  Without anyone maintaining the ward, the vampires will descend on Dragon Valley, and it will all be over."

I was shocked.  I couldn't lose this newfound home!  I just couldn't!  I knew exactly what to do.

"Can I help maintain the ward?"

"Not right now, kid.  You're too young.  But when you get old enough, yes."

That was exactly the answer I was hoping for.

The rest of the week was a blur.  When I wasn't at school, I was at work.  Finally, Saturday came - no school.  I spent the time first fixing the TV (the thing had broken again!)...

...then tinkering with various objects...

...and finally going to work.

What would the next week bring?  And when would I finally be old enough to help maintain the ward?
